When we look beyond the walls and see the whole person, extraordinary transformations become possible.

On February 26, 2026, Green Haven Correctional Facility became the site of something extraordinary. The fourth Beyond the Block event—and the facility's very first—brought together incarcerated peformers to share powerful stories of courage, growth, and redemption with their peers.

Beyond the Block started in 2023 when Hudson Link alumni at Sing Sing Correctional Facility proposed an ambitious idea. These students, inspired by previous TEDx events at Sing Sing, wanted to create a platform where they could openly discuss their struggles, celebrate their victories, and demonstrate their determination to overcome both personal and systemic obstacles. What began as a single event has evolved into something much larger. After three successful presentations—including one that expanded beyond New York to San Antonio—Beyond the Block has proven its power to transform perspectives about incarcerated people and highlight the unlimited potential that exists within every person.

Co-hosted by Emmy nominee Bryonn Bain and Carlos Herring, the event featured a diverse lineup of incarcerated performers who courageously shared their stories of change and development. The programming also included presentations from formerly incarcerated advocates, offering unique perspectives on life after incarceration.Perhaps most notably, the event featured an unprecedented conversation between Castro and a correctional officer. This groundbreaking dialogue invited the audience to participate in bridging the often-perceived divide between prison staff and incarcerated people—demonstrating the power of open communication in breaking down barriers within correctional environments.

With each passing event, Beyond the Block continues to prove that transformation is possible anywhere, and that every person possesses unlimited potential regardless of their circumstances. As this movement continues to expand, it carries with it the promise that every voice matters and every story has the power to inspire change, both within correctional facilities and in the broader community.
