A Second Chance, Painted Large

STORMVILLE, NY -- Inside Green Haven Correctional Facility, the walls have something new to say.
A sweeping 20-foot mural now anchors a central common area at Green Haven — vivid, technically sophisticated, and unmistakably human. It is not decoration. It is a declaration: that transformation is possible, that talent has no permanent address, and that the right partnership can turn concrete and paint into something that changes lives.
The mural is the result of a collaboration between EastCoast MuralPros, a NextGen Wall Printing company that prints high-resolution graphics directly onto walls using mobile technology, the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS), Columbia-Greene Community College, a college offering educational opportunities to incarcerated people through its own degree programs, and Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison, a pioneering nonprofit that serves as a third-party facilitator for college-level education inside New York State prisons.
“The artwork is a physical manifestation of a belief we both share: that every individual carries the capacity for positive change. Each element of the design is a second chance made visible.” — Adam Herz, Founder, EastCoast MuralPros
The Story Behind the Wall
Sean Pica, President of Hudson Link, had a vision that was simple but powerful: transform the lived experiences of incarcerated men into art that would touch everyone who encountered it. When he introduced Adam Herz to the Columbia-Greene Community College students at Green Haven, they approached this project with a shared belief—that their stories, told through creative expression, could move residents, corrections staff, and visitors in profound ways.
“This mural will inspire individuals at Green Haven for generations to come and provide hope for them to tap into their potential. Columbia-Greene Community College are proud partners of the invovled organizations who provide a pathway for incarcerated individuals to reenter the workforce and have a second chance.” — Dr. Victoria Walsh, President, Columbia-Greene Community College
Commissioner Daniel Martuscello from New York State's Department of Corrections and Community Supervision understood the potential from this project better than most. Having once served as leadership at Green Haven, he knew firsthand the transformative power of education within these walls. Standing alongside Green Haven Superintendent Mark Miller, Martuscello watched something extraordinarily unfold during the intensive 7-hour collaboration between East Coast Mural Pros, Hudson Link, and the participating students at Green Haven.
““Projects like this demonstrate what’s possible when education, innovation, and second chances intersect. DOCCS is committed to creating opportunities for personal growth and preparation for reentry. This collaboration at Green Haven is a true reflection of our broader mission to support meaningful programming that helps individuals develop skills, express themselves, and build a foundation for a successful future.” — Daniel F. Martuscello III, Commissioner, NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision
When the ink dried, what emerged on that wall represented more than artistic skill. It embodied the lived experiences of men who had found their voices through art, supported by leaders willing to see beyond traditional boundaries. It was proof of a model — one where art, education, and industry converge to create something larger than any single organization could achieve alone.
The Story That Completes the Circle
Among those who helped bring the mural to life was Albert — a man who knows these walls from the inside. Albert was himself incarcerated at Green Haven and participated in the Hudson Link program through Mercy University at Sing Sing years prior. He joined EastCoast MuralPros initially as a day laborer. Within 90 days, his skill, reliability, and commitment had earned him a permanent position on the team.
Stories like Albert are not a footnote. They are the foundation of what comes next.
“It’s rare to find a genuine win-win-win-win. Incarcerated men are inspired by art that speaks to the value of second chances. Students who graduate gain on-the-job paid training at a company that believes in their future. Hudson Link empowers students to transform their lives. And EastCoast MuralPros gains access to a pipeline of high-potential employees who bring an extraordinary level of commitment to the work.” — Sean Pica, President, Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison
A New Model for Hiring and Impact
Inspired by Albert’s trajectory, EastCoast MuralPros and Hudson Link are formalizing a broader partnership: a structured jobs and training program that will prioritize formerly incarcerated graduates as the company scales its mural installations to additional correctional facilities, universities, and public institutions across the region.
This innovative partnership is not comprised of pity. This is not an act of charity. It is a business model built on the conviction that formerly incarcerated people, given the right opportunity and training, are among the most motivated and capable employees in any field.
Expanding the Vision
The success of the mural built in Green Haven is proof of concept. EastCoast MuralPros is now actively expanding its mission — bringing large-scale, high-impact murals to additional correctional facilities, colleges, and partner organizations. Each installation will be an opportunity to employ formerly incarcerated graduates, generate revenue, and create environments that remind the people inside them of who they are capable of becoming.
The companies are seeking partners in this effort: schools, corporations, municipalities, and real estate owners with walls that have a story left to tell.
